There is a place in the heart of Sichuan Province where three great rivers meet.

The Leshan Giant Buddha, together with nearby Mount Emei, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest stone Buddha statue in the world. Standing 71 meters (233 feet) tall, it was carved directly into a sandstone cliff between the 8th and 9th centuries. A Dream Born from Faith
The story begins in the year 713.
A Buddhist monk named Haitong watched the turbulent waters where the Min, Dadu and Qingyi rivers converged.

Haitong believed that carving a monumental Buddha into the cliff would bring peace to the waters and protect travelers.
Many considered the project impossible.

During construction, enormous quantities of rock were removed from the cliff.
Rather than being discarded elsewhere, much of this material naturally fell into the rivers below.
The additional sediment altered the flow of the water, reducing the dangerous currents that had long threatened passing boats.

A Giant Carved into the Mountain

Hidden inside the statue is an ingenious drainage system of channels and cavities designed to carry rainwater away from the monument.
